September 5, 2006 - 10News.com, CA - SAN DIEGO -- A school bus with no students aboard crashed and caught fire on Interstate 15 in Normal Heights Tuesday, briefly trapping the driver and leaving her with burns and other injuries, authorities reported.
The southbound San Diego Unified School District vehicle rear-ended a stationary big rig near Adams Avenue and began burning about 12:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
With the help of motorists, personnel with the CHP and the San Diego Police Department were able to keep the flames under control until firefighters arrived, Highway Patrol public information Officer Brad Baehr said.
Engine crews freed the driver, and medics took her to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of moderately serious injuries.
The accident caused heavy congestion in the area through midafternoon.
The commercial truck had stopped in a traffic lane after getting into non-injury collision, Baehr said.
