Wednesday, August 30, 2006 - Mohave Valley News, NV - BULLHEAD CITY - A Bullhead City Elementary School District bus driver is accused of striking a 10-year-old boy while the bus was waiting to leave the school yard, police said.

The victim, who was allegedly irritating a little girl in the seat behind him, was verbally admonished repeatedly for his behavior. When the behavior continued, Campbell allegedly smacked the boy on the back of the head with an open palm, BHCPD spokeswoman Carrie Conner said.

Charges were filed against Campbell Wednesday morning and he has since been relieved of his duties with the BHCESD.

Which one? -- Or did you mean shmucks?

Myself, a child disrespecting fellow students or the bus driver goes directly to the school office whilst the rest of us go home on schedule. No need to smack a kid when the bus driver has that level of effective support. (jk)

I agree JK but only IF the driver has the support of school staff. Not saying he was smart by smacking the brat but his biggest error was admitting to the parent he actually did something wrong. He should have let the parent complaint process run its course to see if it could locate any weak spots in driver support. All he had to do was tell the parent to call the school board if she wasn't happy with his behaviour, without admitting to anything.

Although I understand your advice, would not suggest an arrogant response to anyone or some sort of denial had the event actually happened.

No comment and continued silence until an attorney does the speaking on behalf of the driver seems acceptable to me these days and in a situation like the one that started this thread.

A school bus driver slapping a child deserves at least a level of representation that pedophiles and child killers seem to have at their beck-n-call.

Wasn't ever spanked by my Dad and a rare event would be the case with my Mom.

I'm not for spanking or slapping kids, although would not question it when a child myself and failing to listen to my grandmother's directions. And it did obtain the desired result nor cause me serious emotional or psychological harm.

And the education I received free of charge from a neighbor when I climbed on and stretched a fence he'd just tightened - that paddling was questioned by me but not by my parents. Their excellent advice on how to avoid a paddling from my neighbors was simply not to destroy the work of others. And again, no serious emotional trauma or psychological harm done.

And the paddlings, slaps with a ruler and such by school staff for disrespecting the teacher or fellow students seemed sufficient to ease misbehavior in class.

One teacher had the 'Willow Whips of Respect' hanging on the wall at the front of her classroom. Lots of studying went on in that classroom. Very rare a disruption. I experienced myself the reason for that and did not repeat my mischief.

I do not recall a school bus driver ever hitting me. I do recall the bus stopping in mid-route, the driver then escorting me off the bus to then walk the rest of the way to school or home. At school I could expect a visit with the 'Paddle of Education.' My parents knew of most any event before I got home. The consequences at home usually involved no desert after served last at supper, no TV, no playing outside, and to bed very early to contemplate in silence my apology to the bus driver. In those days even a child's word was considered his or her bond. To violate ones' bond was a great offense.

Considering my own childhood, the numerous paddlings from a variety of adults to my credit, must then consider what has happened since those days that has brought so many adults to the point of weak-mindness and weak acting attitudes toward raising children to behave respectfully toward others and to act responsibly toward the work and property of others?

FEAR of punishment from bullying adults for punishing a child would seem one answer here. There may be other answers as well.

My parents did not use spanking as a usual means of discipline, but had not other adults intervened with a slap here and a paddle there, leaves no doubt whatsoever in my mind that my childhood disrespect toward others and their property, my rudeness, my childhood defiance and my lack of listening to important directions would have went unchecked - a shame heaped upon my parents and a terror to suffer upon my neighbors, my school and my community.

Myself, with up to seventeen grandchildren visiting during the holidays, when saying prayer at dinner must remember to mention the kind consideration the school principals, neighbors and other adults provided to helped shape a competent future in an unruly child.

Otherwise, most likely at least some of my adult life might have included celebrating the holidays with my fellow inmates rather than with my grandchildren.

Although I very rarely spanked or slapped my children - the exceptions included one child riding a bicycle into traffic without looking and nearly struck by a car, one occurrence when the kids were playing dare by hanging from a second floor window, and one occurrence when the kids were discovered playing with fire in a can in their bedroom.

In the case of playing with fire, we had planned on going to dinner at the local pizza parlor that evening - canceled as well. Instead we went to the library and checked out some books on home safety, came back home and studied.)

Nothing wimpish and enabling adults have said comes close to convincing me, especially when considering my childhood days, that sparing the rod was always the best answer.

To me there should be no demand to spare the rod, but the demand seems ought to be to use the rod sparingly.

Since the driver did no serious harm, suspension would seem most appropriate. Not for slapping the child, but for lacking a professional response if it is the case that he had top-notch school support available.

If school support is weak or nonexistent, then these days silence and letting an attorney make the response is the most appropriate way to manage this kind of situation, in my opinion.

My best advice to school bus drivers is DO NOT HIT KIDS. And DO NOT allow the defiant and disrespectful to remain on the bus. To the school office with the defiant and disrespectful while the rest are transported home on schedule and in a calm, safe environment.

If a slap or paddling is eventually involved from some other adult in the process, be ready to lend the child some advice on how to avoid that outcome in the future.

I love my parents dearly for their love, cleverness and insight at raising me. And my neighbors from my childhood were great at helping intervene in my childhood mischief. Ever grateful and in remembrance.
