The Taxpayer Association of Martinsville/Henry County in Virginia proposes that the Henry County school board look into merging and privatizing the county and city school transportation systems. An official from the taxpayers group says that the change is needed to become more efficient, and due to declining enrollment.

North Dakota operation takes action during massive flood

When the water began to affect the area around Minot Public Schools last month, transportation department personnel and other district employees emptied seven schools, transporting books and other supplies and equipment to the transportation facility, which did not sustain damage. District struggles to break even with fee-for-service busing

The transportation department for the Colorado school system has signed up only half of the 3,000 student riders needed to break even with the new program. Students must pay $1 per ride. School board officials say if the operation can't meet its obligations for service, they could consider working with bus companies that bid on the service.

The new technology from the school transportation software provider will be on view at the company’s booth during the New York Association for Pupil Transportation’s 53rd Annual Conference and Trade Show next week. Officials say the module determines actual versus potential riders on a bus and a ridership trend can then be tracked.

Company officials present the vehicle’s keys to the executive director of Hale Empowerment and Revitalization Organization Inc., which is working on recovery efforts in the wake of tornadoes that recently swept through the state. Navistar also donates $50,000 to the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund.
Iowa district purchases school bus company

The Ogden Community Schools board approved the purchase of the district's longtime contractor, Stumbo Transportation, for $360,300 after owner Doug Stumbo announced his plan to retire this year. The district took over service on July 1. Superintendent of Schools Bill Roederer tells SBF he believes the district will save money in the long term by running its transportation department and school buses.
IC Bus prices to rise in September

Citing soaring commodity costs, the manufacturer will add a surcharge of up to $1,495 to the prices of its school and commercial buses. IC Bus President John McKinney says that the company has been able to absorb some increases through manufacturing efficiencies, “but we could not absorb them all.”
Transportation redesign expected to save over $700K

With dwindling transportation reimbursements from the state, an Illinois school district will launch a plan to cut busing costs for the 2011-12 school year. Strategies include consolidating bus stops, modifying start and end times and removing stops for non-riders.
