VALLEY COTTAGE, N.Y. — School bus drivers from across the state will put their skills to the test here this weekend during the New York State School Bus Safety Competition.
The New York School Bus Contractors Association (NYSBCA) will host the 47th edition of the annual competition at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage on Saturday.
More than 100 school bus drivers from school districts and private contractors will compete in their respective categories, including large buses (Type C and D) and smaller vehicles (Type A).
The day begins with a comprehensive written exam on school bus safety at 8:15 a.m. and continues through the afternoon. Drivers take on a variety of hands-on activities, including vehicle inspections, loading and unloading students, operating a school bus through driving courses, and managing railroad crossings.
The winners of the competition held by NYSBCA will be eligible to advance to the 2018 School Bus Driver International Safety Competition, which will be hosted by the National School Transportation Association in Philadelphia on July 21 and 22.
