Teen steers bus to safety

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A ninth-grade student grabbed the wheel of his school bus and maneuvered the vehicle to safety when the bus driver tumbled into the bus’ stairwell, the Denver Post reports.

The bus driver reached down for a garbage pail that had been knocked over by a student. While the bus was in motion, the driver attempted to right himself and make sure his seat belt was secure, but fell into the stairwell and became stuck. Jeremy Rice left his seat eight rows back and grabbed the wheel.

Rice said he ran to the wheel because a semi-truck was coming right at the bus. He maneuvered the vehicle, turned left and pulled the parking brake, following instructions from the stuck driver.

This is why all loose items and equipment should be secured. Poor bus management by not having the trash bin secured. Poor judgement by the driver for even attempting to retrieve the trash bin while the bus is in motion. The driver falls out of the seat into the stairwell after attempting to make sure his seat belt was secure??!! Why was the seat belt off in the first place?? Three strikes! You are out!

It says he was checking his seatbelt. Read the article. "driver attempted to right himself and make sure his seat belt was secure, but fell into the stairwell " But he was stupid for bothering with the trash bin. Leave it for later. Good kid for saving the day from a careless driver.

Really? So Colorado doesn't have seat belts for their drivers? Talk about jeopardizing the safety of his students and the motoring public. He should lose his job!

I agree the student did a great job and when he gets old that maybe his callingbut on the other hand he will go on to do other greater things like transportation director, but the driver well he needs fired!

Give that kid a bus contract! That would have been a fatal disaster had the bus hit the truck, all for a garbage pail. Never reach for anything on the floor while the bus is in motion.
