Man who stole bus to go to Detroit found not guilty
December 10, 2013
Josiah Daniel Curtis, 26, who broke into a Wyoming, Mich., school bus yard last year and stole a bus to drive to Detroit so that he could record music, was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Curtis appeared in Michigan's Kent County Circuit Court for trial on multiple felony charges, including malicious destruction of property over $20,000 and vehicle theft.
1 killed in Idaho school bus crash with dump truck

The bus is transporting 10 children to an elementary school in Kuna, Idaho, on Thursday morning when it collides with a dump truck. A sixth-grader succumbs to injuries at the scene, and four other students are injured. “My heart goes out to the many students, families, and staff that have been impacted by this accident,” the district's superintendent says.
Fire prompts aide, drivers to distribute smoke detectors

Two children in West Virginia died in the fire in their home on Oct. 21. In response, a bus aide and a group of drivers, with the help of the Logan City Fire Department, give out hundreds of free smoke detectors to grade-school children who ride Logan County buses.
Victims of deadly 1938 bus-train crash remembered

A monument is unveiled in South Jordan, Utah, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the accident, in which the bus driver and 23 students were killed after the train struck the bus as it crossed railroad tracks. The accident reportedly led to a nationwide law requiring buses to stop at all railroad crossings so the driver can both look and listen for oncoming trains.

Video from Lee County Transit shows one of its buses illegally passing a school bus that has its lights flashing and stop arm out. The transit bus driver tells officials that he thought the school bus driver had waved to indicate that it was safe for him to proceed.

Power line falls on school bus during accident

Authorities in Newport News, Va., are continuing to investigate the crash, in which a 17-year-old driver struck a guide wire that was supporting a utility pole, which caused the wire to fall into the path of a school bus, and then the wire ultimately fell across the bus. Officers had the 31 students and the driver remain on the bus until the wire was removed.
Planning keeps buses running during rough weather

Ohio bus driver charged for fatally striking pedestrian

In the October accident, James Livery turned his school bus east onto a road, striking Vance H. Fether, who suffered severe head and abdominal injuries and died a short time later. Livery has been charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter and failure to yield for a pedestrian.
Bus company serving Kentucky district to end operations

The district suspended business with Commonwealth Bus Service on Nov. 8 until officials could further review the transportation contract, and now, a district spokesperson says that transportation officials have been notified that the company is going out of business. In June, one of the company’s buses was involved in a crash that sent 35 people on board to the hospital.
No criminal charges for bus, truck drivers in fatal New Jersey crash

The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office completes its investigation of the February 2012 crash that killed an 11-year-old girl and injured 17 other students in Chesterfield Township. Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi says that upon review of the findings from his office’s investigation and the National Transportation Safety Board’s findings, “the negligent conduct of the parties does not rise to the required level of recklessness that would be needed to bring criminal charges."
Iowa officials caution against falsifying bus repairs

The warnings come after the arrests of two district transportation officials who allegedly lied to the state that problems with buses in their fleets had been repaired. In September, the state Department of Education’s transportation office hired a third school bus inspector, which has enabled the department to do call-back inspections on buses with serious deficiencies.
District launches hotline to report bullying

Wentzville R-IV School District partners with SchoolReach, a school notification system, to provide a CyberBully Hotline program, an anonymous, two-way means for students, parents, guardians and others to report incidents of bullying, harassment or intimidation. The program also includes a separate hotline number just for use on district buses.

Mayson Bac, 11, of North Thurston Public Schools’ Chinook Middle School is named the overall winner of the contest, while first-, second- and third-place winners are named in categories for students ages 5 to 7, 8 to 10, and 11 and up. Officials say the purpose behind the Bullies Aren’t Cool coloring contest was to spark a conversation about bullying between bus drivers, students, school administrators and parents.
