Versatrans solution provides real-time student tracking

The new offering from Tyler Technologies provides instant access to information about where a student gets on or off the bus using RFID technology. Officials say that because this type of technology is already in use by many school districts for lunch point-of-sales systems and library systems, students are already familiar with the process of presenting their cards, and in many cases the same card may be used for all RFID applications.

Bus driver's medical episode prompts safety training

Albuquerque (N.M.) Public Schools’ student transportation services division is instructing its bus passengers on how to stop a bus if the driver is unable to. The training is implemented after Rhonda Carlsen boards her daughters’ bus to stop it because the driver is incapacitated. She discusses the incident with SBF, and Roger Garcia, co-interim director for the transportation division, discusses the components of the training.

Bus slides off road, 21 children evacuated

A front wheel on the bus gets caught in soft mud, pulling the bus to the side. The left wheels remain over the road, while the right ones hover over an embankment. The children on board move to the uphill seats to help steady the bus until a sheriff's deputy arrives.

Collision strips rear tire off of bus

A vehicle crosses the center line of the road, striking the side of the bus. The crash shears two lug nuts off the bus' front left tire and completely removes the outer rear tire. No children are on the bus at the time of the accident.

A high school student on Monday attempted to force his way onto the bus to get to the driver. Investigators believe the student and the three other people involved in the attack were acting on false allegations that the driver had assaulted some students.
Two boys accused of savagely beating bus driver

The students, ages 7 and 8, refuse to comply with a bus aide's instructions to calm down. The driver stops the bus to assist the aide, and one of the boys allegedly knocks her to the ground, grabs her hair and slams her head against the floor. The other boy then joins in the beating.

Ontario consortium launches bus stop safety program

The Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium implements the “Be Seen, Be Safe” initiative after reading in SBF about its implementation at a school district in Texas. As General Manager Judi Green tells SBF, children in junior kindergarten through third grade wear flashing amber lights to improve their visibility when getting to bus stops in times of limited daylight and extreme weather.
Attorney general challenges bus kidnapper’s parole

The California Attorney General's Office files an appeal in the February ruling by the First District Court of Appeal to grant parole to 1976 Chowchilla school bus kidnapper Richard Schoenfeld. The appeal claims that the ruling misinterpreted the law governing Schoenfeld’s release.
