LANSING, Mich. — State lawmakers are considering legislation that would add a new, lower level of bright flashing rear lights on new Michigan school buses, WZZM reports.

Nancee Privacky told lawmakers Wednesday that her daughter, Antonia, would have been 14 years old this week if she had not been in her brother’s car when it smashed into the back of a stopped school bus last December. Antonia’s brother Bruce was also killed.

The legislation was met with no opposition Wednesday. If passed, it will be known as the Privacky Law.

Today was the first day of school here in S.W. lower Michigan. A bus was stopped, had it's tail lights flashing red as well as the bright white light on top flashing. The other red stop lights above the back door were not flashing nor the yellow lights above the door. Why were the tail lights flashing? I stopped anyway, not knowing what to do.

I believe the problem is in educating the public motorist on the laws of the school bus, and cell phones do not need to be used during transportation. I really do not think the light thing really matters. Lets stifen the fines and educate the new and old public drivers.

I agree that you might get more attention if you place lights lower on the bus, however if people were to put their eyes to the front of the vehicle they are driving . . . they might see the lights that already exsist. I understand the extreme pain these parents must be going through, however the extra lights aren't going to solve that. We need to have a law that says NO cell phones to be used in the car period!! That would save lives! Sue, Grand Rapids, MI

Better add a dozen more lights to the fronts while your at it. Driver accountibility is the issue and not how many lights you can put on the buses. Driver's need to start paying attention to driving and not every other thing happening on the planet, i.e. ban cellphone use and make the fine $1000 for 1st offense. Maybe then these idiots who can't even walk and chew gum at the same time will stop using their cellphone while trying to steer a deadly weapon down the highway. More people by far are killed with automobiles then guns and yet people are nuts over gun control. But heaven forbide you should take their cell phone away from them. They have their rights you know..... http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/gallery/kingston_bus_crash/

Two of the districts that I have driven for have installed those lower red lights that strobe on some buses, and people still run past them all the time. Unfortunately the problem is not as simple to fix as just putting more lights on the bus.

Hey more lights, that great. While you're at it add another set of turn signals and another set of brake lights and another set of clearance lights and another set of head lights and another set of dome lights and etc etc etc hey you never can have enough lighting - or can you..... With condolances and all due respect to the family of those kids, me thinkith we focus on makeing too many laws and not focus enough on the road and traffic.
