When it comes to bullying, students themselves are the first line of defense, according to a new video-based educational program.

STAND TALL, by Suzanne W. Peck, teaches responses to disrespectful behaviors, encouraging kids to stand up for themselves and for others who are being bullied. The program was developed for teachers and students in grades 4 to 6.

"Look for opportunities to reinforce respectful behaviors, constructive dialog, speaking up for others and resolving conflicts,” Peck suggests in the program. “Make heroes out of kids who stand tall!"

Students watch the STAND TALL videos and do classroom exercises to build skills for creating a positive classroom community. The seven quick chapters, correlated with four video modules, aim to foster respect for individual differences, discussion to add to understanding and action that transforms behavior.

One of the modules, which features commentary from educators, legal experts and counselors, provides teachers with guidance for using the student-oriented materials. The program also provides advice on preventing harassment, clarification of relevant laws and Department of Education guidelines, and a compendium of resources and classroom activities.

Peck, an educator, author and consultant, designs and leads training programs for culturally diverse audiences of all ages.

She co-authored RUFF: A Lost Dog Tale and 5 Great Strategies to Manage Change at Work and Beyond. She also helped develop I’m in Charge, a health care consumer-assertiveness education program; Expect the Best, starring Phylicia and Ahmad Rashad; How to Make Meetings Work; and Boomerang, an equal employment opportunity training program.
