AMF-Bruns Names 2nd Special-Needs School Bus Driver of the Year

EAST BATON ROUGE, La. — Securement supplier AMF-Bruns of America honored — for the second year in a row — a special-needs school bus driver for their exemplary service last week.

Freddie Phillips, a special-needs bus driver for East Baton Rouge (La.) Parish School System, was named the winner of the second annual AMF-Bruns National Special-Needs School Bus Driver of the Year Award, according to a news release from the securement supplier.

In addition to his responsibilities as a special-needs school bus driver, Phillips trains bus operators in lift-gate procedures, child restraint systems, and car seat installation. He also participates in the school’s Extended School Services (ESS) program, helping students with learning challenges. When Hurricane Matthew flooded Baton Rouge with two feet of water in 2016, Phillips drove stranded residents from nursing homes, houses, and community centers to shelters.

“The unsung heroes in the school bus community are dedicated special-needs bus drivers such as Freddie Phillips who go over and beyond the call of duty helping those with the greatest needs,” said Peter Haarhuis, CEO of AMF-Bruns of America.

Phillips was recognized for his achievements and received his award at a special ceremony held at his school district on Oct. 22. The award presenters included Steve Barker, sales manager for AMF-Bruns of America, and Donna Broussard-Martin, the special education transportation supervisor for East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

The securement supplier received a tremendous response from candidates across North America, according to AMF-Bruns.

“Choosing one winner amongst this extraordinary group of candidates was a difficult undertaking,” Haarhius said. “Each nominated bus driver could have easily won the award. We thank everyone for their nominations.”
