PASSAIC, N.J. — A school bus carrying special-needs students crashed into a lawn of a home here on Tuesday, police said.

Officers responded to the incident at 529 Harrison St. at around 3:41 p.m., according to a news release from the Passaic Police Department. The bus, operated by Jersey Kids Transportation Inc., was transporting students home from CTC Academy when the bus driver told police that the bus's brakes had failed after starting the bus from a stop. The driver added that the bus sideswiped another vehicle and then came to rest on the lawn of a home.

No one on board was injured; however, four students in wheelchairs — ranging from ages 9 to 13 — were all transported to a local hospital for evaluation, and then later released after the arrival of their parents, according to police. Police said no summonses were issued in the incident, and that the crash remains under investigation.

The manager of Jersey Kids Transportation Inc. told CBS2 that the school bus was inspected on Tuesday morning, and that the driver, who has been with the company for two years, has never had an accident.
