SOMERVILLE, Texas — Authorities said that a school bus driver was arrested and is facing a felony charge after allegedly leaving an elementary school student with special needs alone on the bus all day, KBTX reports.

The 6-year-old student was left on the Somerville Independent School District bus after morning drop off, and wasn’t found until the end of the school day, according to the news source. Chief Craig Wise of Somerville Police Department told KBTX that the department was notified on Jan. 16 about the incident.

Andrea Howard, the student’s mother, told the news source that her son, who has autism and is slightly non-verbal, was left on the bus for approximately eight hours, and believes he may have fallen asleep during the morning bus ride to Somerville Elementary School. Howard added that the district has since apologized for the incident, and that her son is back on the bus he had originally been riding.

The Burleson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KBTX on Wednesday that the driver, Timothy Galbreath, was arrested for abandoning or endangering a child. Galbreath was bonded out of the Burleson County jail soon after his arrest, and is currently on paid administrative leave from the district, according to the news source.
