LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A third grade student was killed and at least 45 others were injured in a charter bus crash here on Monday morning, police said.

The crash was reported to police around 2:40 a.m. near the 111 mile marker along Interstate 30 west of Benton, according to a press release from the Arkansas State Police. The bus driver told police that she had lost control of the bus, causing it to roll off the roadway.

The bus was carrying a youth football team from the Memphis, Tennessee, area, and was traveling from Dallas, Texas, to Memphis, after the team played in a weekend championship game.

At least 45 passengers, mostly students, were injured in the crash, and were transported to various hospitals, according to police. An official from Arkansas Children's Hospital told the Associated Press that 22 of the 26 students aged 9 to 13 who were admitted to the facility were released by Monday afternoon, and that the four remaining students were expected to fully recover from their injuries.
