Student Struck by Car While Running to School Bus

BISMARCK, N.D. — A student here was struck by a car while he was running toward his school bus on Tuesday, Grand Forks Herald reports.

Bismarck Police Department Sgt. Mark Buschena told the newspaper that when police arrived at the scene, at around 8 a.m., the 6-year-old boy had been taken by ambulance to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing five children run toward the bus, and all but one of them stopped before they got to the roadway to avoid a moving vehicle, according to Grand Forks Herald. The boy who was injured reportedly kept running and went into the road, and was knocked down by the car’s passenger-side front door. According to witnesses, the boy got up and started crying. The bus driver told police that he had slowed down, turned on his lights and put out the stop arm, but the vehicle did not slow down, according to the newspaper.

Kayode Folorunsho, the reported driver of the car, has not yet been cited or charged, but the case has been sent to the city attorney for a review of charges, most likely for not stopping for a bus, Grand Forks Herald reports.

The police department reminded motorists on its Facebook page (see below) to stop for school buses with flashing red lights, which is the law, and noted that there is a fee of $100 and six points on a driver’s license for violating this law. The reminder also pointed out that police have received 46 reports of drivers not stopping for school buses since the 2017-18 school year started.
