STATE COLLEGE, Penn. — Nearly 100 school bus drivers convened here recently to take part in the 2016 Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Safety Competition.

Last year, the competition took place on a rainy day. This year, which marked the 40th anniversary of the Pennsylvania event, competitors were treated to sunny skies.

A total of 92 drivers — 78 in the conventional category and 14 in the transit category — traveled from across the state to Mount Nittany Middle School in State College. The event kicked off on the evening of Friday, June 24, with an orientation and written examination.

The next morning, the drivers returned to the middle school and competed in the skills competition, which included physical and verbal bus inspection, height judgment, diminishing clearance, simulated bus stop, railroad crossings, backing up, and curb line parking.

The list of winners in the conventional and transit categories can be found on the Pennsylvania School Bus Association website.

The following contestants will represent Pennsylvania at the School Bus Driver International School Bus Safety Competition in Greensboro, North Carolina, on July 17:

Conventional bus
Shanon O’Brien, Krapf Bus
Larry Hannon Sr., Centennial School District

Transit bus
Philip Adam Jr., Rohrer Bus
John Welsh, Lower Merion School District
