Hi my name is Wesley I have been on the hunt for finding out if I can purchase a new school bus and still have the lights, stop arm and get it painted yellow. I currently live in Ohio and really would like to know the requirements if purchasing for myself and not school district. Someone said for sure I would have to not have the text: "School Bus" put on that is completely okay with me as long as I can still get lights, stop arm, painted yellow. Also to operate a bus with air brakes do I have to have a CDL Class B or Class A. If anyone would be willing to assist me that would be great. Thank you

If you can be more specific on its intended use. I may be able to give you some feedback on whether or not this would be legal in Ohio. The intended use would make a great deal of the legality of buying a bus!

Okay thank you for your feedback sorry for late reply it’s just I contact a dealer and they said they are not allowed to put in a new order for me if I want the lights, stop arm, etc. if I did want to buy a brand new bus from them they said I couldn’t get the amber lights and the red lights, stop arm, etc. but I kinda wanted to get those features the only thing I wouldn’t mind having is it being painted white and not having it say school bus. But I still want the lights and stop arm, etc. I wouldn’t use it inappropriately I would only use it for picking up friends to go on trip with me more for personal use. Like I was disappointed when the guy said they can’t put the stop arm on noir the lights. I really want those. The dealer I talked too was truck sales and service if you could help me get around that that would be great. Thank you

Ohio has rules/laws in place that forbid the dealer from supplying those for non-school buses (since non-school buses cannot legally have them). He can't risk his business.

I'd say 90% of law enforcement in this state couldn't care less if you have them as long as they aren't used...but if that other 10% sees you driving around a white bus with flashers and a sign...look out.

Thanks for the reply so if I got it painted white and got the stop arm and lights separate how would I hook them up. Because the dealer said they can’t sell me a bus with them hooked up.

Like I thought it would be cool to own a school bus and order a brand new one but I wouldn't use the stop lights/arm inappropriately I would maybe test them out on the country roads for fun when there is no traffic. But I just talked to my dealer and they said they cannot sell me one built with the lights, stop arm, etc. But I could buy the parts not put together, And those are something I definitely would want and the reason is is because if I ever plan a party and I would go pick up my friends in my cool bus to take to my party that is one of my reasons i can think of. But I just want to make sure I wont get in trouble if I myself end up putting them on if its painted white. Any more help on laws and stuff would be greatly appreciated. Again I have no intentions of using the stop lights inappropriately and hardly would ever use except on rare occasions out in country. Thank you for any more help.

You are telling us how you will not use the lights inappropriately and then go on to describe how you WOULD inappropriately use them...

I'm sure the OP has moved on, but in my state for instance, state law defines "school bus" and the allowed uses for it. If you're not hauling students/disabled/elderly, it's not a school bus and therefore can't have the yellow color and lights that are allowed for school buses.

A friend was pulled over in the midwest somewhere, 20 years ago, because his skoolie was yellow. No ticket, just an info chat. Don't know if the lights were still present or functional, but I bet using them would be a bad ticket anywhere.

Buying new would be crazy in any case. Even if a dealer was interested in selling to an individual (highly unlikely, and probably not allowed in most places) a new bus is in the $100,000 range compared to nice used buses for what, 5~10% of that?
