I have a FE 300 with a DT 466 . Lately it would die without warning . Most times it would start back up . Today the bus kept quitting during run . Got a 553 DTC . So I replaced what I thought was the relay giving issue . Code dispersed and bus started up . Before driver got belt on bus died again .Bus started right up . Now I notice voltage is charging at 12.8 is this too low ? How do I tell which relay to replace and could it be in the terminals in the battery box ?

weird, DTC553 is IDM CKPO signal inactive, this is not relay fault, either CKP sensor or IDM & ECM connection fault, are you sure you only got code DTC 553 and after you changed relay, the code gone and bus started up? which relay did you change? How the bus acted before it dies? does it shake? Die when you driving or when you stop? Every time die, does it come with engine light? there are lots of relay, IDM relay,ECM relay, start relay... but I donot think it's electrical problem because it's less chance to start up right away if you got bad relay.

This situation started when driver came in and pre tripped her bus . The river left the bus running and swept the bus . Just dies like some one turned the key So replaced a relay behind the windshield wiper door . Driver didn't trust the bus so we made another driver swap buses .That driver said it would die during his run but start back up . After about 75% done with route bus died again but wouldn't restart When we got there the driver said nothing came and bus didn't shudder to a stop . Said it was like someone turned key off .I used ny service maxx and it gave me the 553 code . I had to erase the code 3 times before bus would start . This driver used to work on trucks . Now the other concern and wonder if this is the issue is charging it's at 12.8 volts Thanks

with no idiot lights(engine, trans.,ABS) that should be on the data link as well as cruise control
12.8 is low it should be >13 volts running

You should check ignition switch first to see if it lost connection, then check the wiring connection IDM X3 pin 5 to ECM X1 pin 19- CKPO and IDM X3 pin 10 to ECM x1 pin 24-CMPO, check if the pin bent, if everything are ok, you may replace crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor. Let me know if it helps.

I have had both due that to us also cam / crank sensor and also even the wiring harness pigtail for relay being bad.

The bus should be putting out about 14.2 volts or so when running. You may have a bad alternator and with to many loads turned on the computer may be sending out low voltage signals that can cause a variety of weird problems with relays and other outputs as well. I would suggest full fielding the alternator and if the voltage goes up the alternator is likely good and you probably have a bad battery or two. This would be the first place to begin looking. 12.2 volts is way to low while running this could be causing voltage drops etc.

Okay I thought I had a bad alternator . So I hooked up my laptop and it would show me 12.6 volts . I then went to check the batteries they tested good . So I started bus up and checked charging at the batteries and I get 13.7 volts . The volt gauge shows a little over 12 volts amp gauge is above zero . Now is the computer system part of the charging ? Do I need to worry about the gauge issue ? Need some advice . Thanks

Since you explained getting 13.7V after you started bus, your alternator should be ok, no matter the gauge issue, it cannot cause your bus keeps dying.

You have a faulty ignition switch causing the voltage drop it supplies the gauge , have had this issue several times always on the FE buses for some reason , it will read good charging system voltage at the batteries but the gauge indicates low voltage this is the ignition switch . You may also want to check the connector they have a tendency to melt pretty bad see these quite a bit we already keep connectors in stock ready to go.

I am back again with this . I replaced the ignition switch and voltage came up too 13.7 . Sent bus out and she told me it died once . This morning bus went out and she told me it died 4 times . Went to check it out and voltage is at 12.2 . I want to change the pigtail except International shoes no pig tail replacement . Does anybody have a number ? When I plugged the connector onto the new switch I was worried it wasn't tight enough .
