Just had a second electric, 2 position door switch on an IC go bad. Had to buy one last year and the price was $ 97.23. This year the price is $194.73. Seems like a high price to pay when the only thing bad with the switch is the plastic turn handle. Anybody know where you can buy just the parts you need to fix the switch instead of the whole switch? |

That's the price...Ouch! I use steering wheel switches and have yet to replace one. I paid $90.54 in '07 for a spare and suppose it's twice as much... |

I had to revive this topic when I was checking on a price today and found this:
http://commerce1.cera.net/tacbusparts/sections/catalog/catalog.asp?cat_id=477
4th one down, $318.90
Are the contacts solid gold? Handle made of ivory? Is it magic and just knows when the driver wants to open/close the door, so all they have to do is think it?
I seek to understand. |

We have been known to build rotory switch handles from round aluminum stock, time consuming but it is a one time fix. |

Looks like the same switch is in item #5. They are just charging you $175.85 more for the wiring harness. |

Can you replace it with a toggle? I drove a Blue Bird with an electric door a couple times... Its door was controlled by an on/off metal toggle and worked just fine! |

I like the hand-crafted aluminum idea!
As for the toggle idea, sure it is doable (at least for the older stuff). They had three circuits in the switch, I would just use a DPDT, run the signals for door and warning through it, then relay the stepwell light circuit since its the least critical.
I cant vouch for the newer stuff. |

What's the failure mode on the switch? Is the plastic handle loosening from the shaft?

Typical IH corner cutting. The plastic boss that the lever retaining collar threads on to strips and the lever ends up in your hand. I also want to know why parts are unavailable for 8 year old buses? Transpec stop arm modules? No dice. Fan clutch solenoid? Not available either. I really don't relish spending a grand to change it over to a Horton air clutch. There is no excuse for such poor design. JUNK JUNK JUNK! Erik |

When my rotary switches fail, I replace them with a heater switch (Part #441142004). I use the same pigtail as the rotary switch to wire them. If I knew how, I'd add a picture of the wiring diagram I have for it. If you'd like the wiring diagram, email me at tdvorak@isd721.org.

Just FYI, 441142004 is no longer available. New number is 6131248C1. It's also just a WEE bit cheaper.
