We're new to disc brakes, we have 53 new buses with them. We had our first state inspection failure and had to replace the front and rear pads. The bus only has 20K miles on it. From what we were told, that's VERY premature.
- What kind of service life are you fellows seeing?
- What pads are you running?
- Have you had to replace any rotors and how many miles did you get out of them?
Thanks, Scott |

Uh, yeah....that is way too early.
9 buses with them, about 200,000 total miles so far.
We just did a rear set of pads at 50,000 with a driver that is hard on brakes and we think it would have gone longer but for the caliper recall (left rear over adjusting). Left rear was thinner than the rest. It didn't qualify for new pads as part of the recall. Rotors still looked new.
Another bus is about 60,000 and it's going to be ready for rears soon...same deal...left rear worn worst.
None of the rest are even close to thinking about needing pads.
We used the overpriced Bendix pads since there is still warranty left on the system. Same ones it came from factory with. We have some parts guys pushing aftermarket and harder linings, but I'm a little hesitant to use them and risk wearing the rotors out too fast. |

Yes that is very early. I do recommend the better pads. BXK042457. This came straight from a regional Bendix Rep. |

Oh you make a good point, it doesn't specify air or hydro. My references are for air disk. |

We have 62 2012-2014 MY C2's with air disc brakes. The average miles was around 30k. We installed engine brake switches and that has greatly increased pad mileage. The pad life is closer to 80k now. |

Sorry for the lack of info, fellows.
They are 2019 and 2020 C-2’s with air brakes. |

Got one in right now, 35,000 and it's ready for rear. This is the unit I said had nearly 60,000 miles, I stand corrected.
Still cheaper than a drum bus I guess. For now. |

We have 2 new Thomas HDX with Bendix air disc brakes. I don't know what lining it has - whatever came from the factory. I just had to replace the rear brake pads on the first one at 25K miles. The front brakes are still around 50%. Seems pretty low to me too. Our routes are all pretty easy and our drivers are pretty good. I would guess we average 80K-90K miles with drums. I definitely like how easy they are to replace. |

WE have 6 air disk buses. 3 Visions (Bbird) and 3 transit Bbirds. The 1 without VGT braking we got 45000 miles on the rear 55000 on the front. The ones with VGT, over 80000 and replaced the rear because of the recall not because of wear. A sister district told me they get about 25-35000 but dont run an engine brake at all. Hope it helps. |
