I am working on a 2000 international/Thomas . I know about the liability we have as school bus technicians. my question is what do you do about a bus that the window buzzers do not work .the latches and window switches and buzzer in the dash has been replaced. the buzzer will not shut off. I'm fixing to start removing the panels along the roof and search for a wire issue . my question is what do you do about a 19 year old bus that the buzzers do not work ? its a major safety issue ..

no sticker for the road up here
if the buzzer is going then a rub through is what your more than likely looking for, found alot of the time the wire is bad at window frame, years of body flex, etc.

OEM trained in wiring and all engine platforms for over 20 years

I agree with Blue, you have to have them working to pass the test here. Here's how my thought process works. I think about a time in the future where there has been an accident caused by the exit buzzers being inoperative. If they just went out and no one knew it then you'll be ok.... eventually. That being that there will still be a trial and you will still be looked at as the bad guy because you didn't fix it even if you didn't know it in the first place. But..... if you do know about the problem and send it out then Katy bar the doors, you are in a heap of trouble.

You are asking for a major lawsuit if you knowingly send that bus out on a route, and god forbid there happens to be some terrible accident you could end up behind bars. I would not send that bus out under any
circumstances until the problem is resolved. If you are out of spare units call upon a neighboring district and ask if you can borrow one theirs.

I may be wrong, but I don't think we can run a bus more than 15 years. I know the oldest we have now are '05s and next year is their last year.

And, yes, the buzzers have to work to pass state inspection.

That's a state by state regulation. I have one that's 19 years old and will likely see 20 before we trade it. I have probably 50 percent of my fleet that is over 15 years old.

It’s not that big of a deal to track down what’s wrong. Obviously a bare wire or a bad switch. Give me my impact driver, a square bit and a half hour and I’ll have it fixed.

I was formally Baptistbusman. However, I lost my password, and had not updated my email address.

I'm not afraid to do it again . thanks again

WOW! I don't think mine are going to see that but you never know. When I started at this district, in 1993, I had one that was a 1978 and one 1976. The next one newer was a 1982. I thought those were antiques back then. lol Little did I know I would live to see the day when we had a couple that were older than those. But, I would argue, these 2000 models are better built buses than those old late 70s Carpenters were.
