My new BB All American (2016) w/6.7 Cummmins came in with Blue coolant. Our 2013's came in with pink coolant. Does anybody know if it's OK to mix them? I have been told it's OK to do so,but want to be sure. Thoughts? Ed
cummins wont be a fan of any coolant that doesnt meet their spec. ive heard of warranty claims for cylinder sleeve damage being denied due to improper coolant.
Both the pink and the blue are compatible as both use DCA's to control corrosion. The important thing to remember is the Documentation of DCA levels at every service, and adding DCA if needed. Test strips are available from several sources Fleet Rite is one. We have coolant filters installed on all of our units from the factory and use filters containing DCA to keep levels at specifications.
I just talked to the Cummins dealer here and they said you have to use the same color coolant as what the engine came with. Why in the world did Blue Bird use different coolants in the same engine?
Blue Bird changed from the "Pink" to the "Blue" because there was too much confusion between Red coolant and the pink.....OK that makes it sound even more confusing :-)
Bottom line is they were having issues with people mixing coolants that were not compatible because of color similarity vs. people actually checking on the chemical make up.
Going to the Blue made it easier to pinpoint exactly what to use.
Coolant color is NEVER the way to determine what is correct. Always review what was used OE and then use coolant meeting the same chemical composition and ASTM or SAE testing standards.
