Hi, has anyone experienced surging at low idle on an older 8.2l Detroit diesel? The one I am servicing fluctuates between 700 and 850 rpm. Mid range and high speed are fine. It has new injectors that are adjusted to spec.

8.2s are known for doing this when cold. When the engine is fully warmed to 180 degrees and driven a bit, does the idle surge still occur? If yes, then I believe there is a buffer screw that can be adjusted in the governor that is supposed to prevent surging. The service manual has instructions on this. If I can help you further, let me know.

The old two cycle Detroits had the same no load problem.

If it doesn't fit, FORCE it.
If it breaks, well, it needed replacing anyway.

I think the 2 strokes had a worse problem with that. 2 stroke engines rev so much quicker.

International 9.0 is right on. If they only do it cold then its no biggie. All the time and a simple buffer screw adjustment is in order. I miss the old 8.2's
