School bus operators across the country are again being called on to tally the number of vehicles that illegally pass their buses in one day.

This will be the fifth edition of the national stop-arm violation count, which is conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS).

NASDPTS has asked each state director to choose a single day between March 1 and May 31 for public and private school bus operators to observe and report motorists illegally passing their buses.

Last year’s national count found a total of 75,966 stop-arm violations in one day. More than 97,000 school bus drivers in 29 states participated in the 2014 count.

NASDPTS officials said that results from the survey have been cited in Congress and by the media in promoting the need for improved safety countermeasures against illegal passing.

NASDPTS Executive Director Charlie Hood and North Carolina state director Derek Graham are managing the project again this year.
