Diesel Steady as It Drops While Gasoline Bumps Upward

Diesel and gasoline, on average, fell again during the past week – although the Gulf Coast and West Coast regions saw slight increases in gas costs.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that gasoline still runs about $3.42 per gallon on average across the nation. The average price of diesel fell to $4.18 – down nearly 6 cents from the previous week.

Current average fuel prices by region (gasoline/diesel):

• East Coast: $3.30/$4.24
• Midwest: $3.24/$3.97
• Gulf Coast: $3.08/$3.88
• Rocky Mountain: $3.54/$4.23
• West Coast: $4.38/$4.80

“The national average price of gasoline has seen little overall change over the last week, with big decreases in states like Colorado and Ohio offset by large increases in Arizona and North Carolina,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “While more states saw declines than increases, any downward trends are still likely to be temporary and not necessarily long lasting.”

He noted that Colorado may be past its recent refinery issues, but the transition to summer gasoline in Arizona has proved challenging, resulting in tighter supply and rising prices.
