PROVIDENCE, R.I. — On June 7, legislation designed to help the state's school districts cut transportation costs was approved by the House of Representatives and is now on its way to the Senate.

If ultimately signed by Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, the bill would allow school districts to use small-size buses, vans and SUVs rather than full-size school buses to transport students.

It would also specify safety features required for each vehicle — such as flashing red lamps to be used when loading or unloading students — and would require the drivers to have a chauffeur's license. As such, drivers would have to endure criminal record checks and DMV testing to be considered for the position.

The bill has received support from the Rhode Island Association of School Committees, as well as the Rhode Island Department of Education.
