A documentary that shows the intriguing journey of a retired American school bus will begin its theatrical release this month.
"La Camioneta" follows a decommissioned school bus from an auction in Pennsylvania to its new life in Guatemala, where it is repainted and repurposed to provide public transportation between the highlands and Guatemala City.
The profession is fraught with peril: The camioneta drivers and fare collectors are often the target of extortion, and many have been killed in the line of duty.
"La Camioneta," an early version of which was screened at the National Association for Pupil Transportation conference in Cincinnati in 2011, will open in New York City at the reRun Theater on May 31, running until June 6. Director/Producer Mark Kendall and others involved in the film will be in attendance at the screenings for a Q&A.
The documentary will then play in Los Angeles at the Downtown Independent (June 7-13) and then in San Diego at the Digital Gym (July 2-7).
