For the first time since March 2013, the average on-highway price for diesel in the U.S. has risen above $4 per gallon, new federal data show.

On Monday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that the average diesel price in the nation was at $4.017. That's up from $3.989 in the agency's previous weekly report, on Feb. 17.

The average on-highway price for diesel dipped below $4 per gallon on April 1 of last year. The lowest average since then was $3.817 on July 1.

The Energy Information Administration maintains a history of weekly averages for diesel dating back to March 21, 1994, when the national average price for the fuel was just $1.106 per gallon.
