DANVILLE, Va. — A toddler was killed after he wandered in front of a school bus on Monday afternoon, police said.
According to the Danville Police Department, a school bus that was carrying elementary school students had just dropped off two children at a bus stop around 4 p.m.
Police said that as the bus began moving forward to continue on its route, it struck 20-month-old Tayshaun Jackson, who had made his way in front of the bus while it was stopped.
Police, fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The child was taken to a hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead by emergency department staff.
At the time of the accident, there were two boys and one girl on the bus. They were not injured. Those students were picked up by another bus and taken to their destinations.
Danville Police investigators were notified and responded. The toddler’s body was to be sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy. The investigation is continuing, police said.
