CHESTERFIELD, Va. — Chesterfield County parents can now find out through Twitter if their child’s school bus is delayed.

As of Monday, Chesterfield County Public Schools’ five area offices for transportation plan to tweet as soon as possible if a bus is running late by 15 minutes or more, either when picking students up in the morning or returning students to their bus stops in the afternoon, according to a district press release. (See an example of a tweet below.)

“Twitter will help us provide timely information for parents and students about buses that may be delayed by traffic or for some other reason. It’s free and our community already uses Twitter,” said Dr. Robert Wingfield, director of pupil transportation for Chesterfield County Public Schools. “Our goal is always to be on time picking up and dropping off students, but when that is not possible, we want our parents to know.

“Chesterfield County Public Schools has been tweeting as @ccpsinfo since 2009 and has more than 14,000 followers. Now we are joining other school systems across the country that tweet bus updates.”

Parents can find out which area office runs their children’s school buses by going to mychesterfieldschools.com/transportation/bus-routes, locating their children’s school and bus route, and then following the Twitter feed for that area office.

Generally, each tweet will start with the name of the school and the bus route that is running late so that parents will be able to easily see if their children are affected. Employees in the area transportation offices are currently focusing on tweeting out information, and will not reply to tweets. School bus drivers will not be tweeting updates, according to the district.
