HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A student here was able to ride home on a school bus she was not assigned to on Monday by writing a fake excuse note, KTRK reports.

School staff accepted the letter from the 7-year-old girl, who took the bus home instead of attending her after-school program, according to the news source. Charlie Dahu, the girl’s father, pointed out to KTRK that she did not spell the word “bus” correctly.

Dahu did not find out his daughter was alone outside their home after she had been dropped off by the bus until a concerned neighbor called him, because the girl asked his wife to use the restroom, according to the news source. The neighbor took her in and they waited for her father to pick her up.

KTRK obtained a statement from Sheldon Independent School District, which said that the district is investigating the situation and reviewing its procedures to make sure that its after-school program staff members receive the same training as its other employees.
