NORTON, Ohio — A high school student here died on Wednesday after he fell off his skateboard and was struck by a school bus, Cleveland.com reports.

Police said that at around 2:45 p.m., Kyle Richmond, 16, was riding a skateboard, fell into the road, and a school bus hit him, according to the news source. Richmond suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cleveland.com. Police are investigating the incident.

A student, Shiane Schandel, who was on the bus at the time of the crash, told The Barberton Herald that the bus driver had stopped and looked both ways before starting to pull out (the bus was in the high school's driveway, according to the Akron Beacon Journal). Schandel also said that Richmond had "tried to say 'stop' but it was too late."

Norton City Schools released a statement on Thursday that said that it remained open to support students, staff, and families following the tragic loss. It also stated that counselors were available on Thursday and Friday, that additional support was available through the administrative office, and that the district’s thoughts and prayers are with the family.
