NEW LENOX, Ill. — A school bus aide here who allegedly slapped a student with autism in April has been fired, a school board member told the Chicago Tribune.

Bus surveillance video from the April 25 incident allegedly showed a bus aide slapping Kayle Rushing across the face twice, according to WILX. New Lenox School District 122 Superintendent Peggy Manville told the Chicago Tribune that school staff members had asked for video from the bus after they saw the aide carrying the 6-year-old student off the bus. (School procedures state that school staff members, not the aide, are supposed to unload students from the bus, according to the newspaper.)

Lincoln-Way Area Special Education District 843, the school district that provides bus service for New Lenox School District 122 students, watched the video and reported the alleged incident to the New Lenox district. The New Lenox district then contacted Rushing’s parents, who asked police to investigate, the Chicago Tribune reports. New Lenox Deputy Police Chief April DiSandro previously reported that police saw parts of the video that indicate that the aide "definitely hit the child," according to the newspaper.

DiSandro added that police concluded the investigation and turned it over to the Will County State's Attorney's Office for review.
