CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — Police told WLWT that 16 students were injured here on Tuesday when the school bus they were riding overturned near a high school.

At about 4:30 p.m., a school bus transporting high school students from Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools turned on its side down the street from Connersville High School, according to the news source. Emergency responders and bystanders rushed to help students exit the bus from the back door and top hatch. The Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools superintendent told WLWT that 16 students were treated for minor injuries and were released to their parents. Investigators told the news source that there were 36 people aboard the bus, including members of a high school swim team.

Police told WLWT that the bus went through a stop sign, hit a utility pole, and flipped over.

Investigators are calling the crash an accident, and said it is unlikely that the driver will be charged, according to the news source.
