ATKINSON, N.H. — Two elementary school students here jumped into action after their school bus driver collapsed due to a medical emergency on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Nolan Barry and Thomas MacKeen were two of five students on board the bus from Atkinson Academy that was slowing down to drop off a student, according to a news release from the Atkinson Police Department. The students told police that they saw the driver fall over from her seat and onto the floor while the bus was still moving.

Police told NECN that the bus driver had activated the emergency braking system, bringing the bus to a stop before her medical emergency.

Barry and MacKeen were able to calm the other students down and get the attention of one of the student’s parents, who was eventually able to help them get off the bus through the rear emergency door, according to police. The driver was treated and transported to the hospital.
