Gary Catapano receives NSC safety award

The National Safety Council honors FirstGroup America's senior vice president of safety with the 2011 Distinguished Service to Safety Award. The award recognizes outstanding service to the field of safety and health, and officials say Catapano was selected because of his work in the area of improving transportation on a national basis.

Linda Burtwistle, president of the school bus contractor, will serve a two-year term as a National Safety Council board member, where she will help to oversee the organization’s strategic direction and finances. In related news, the organization honored First Student safety manger Lydell Banks for developing and implementing programs to improve safety at his New Orleans location.

FirstGroup plc chief executive to retire

Sir Moir Lockhead, who has been with the company for 21 years, will hand over executive responsibilities on Nov. 1 and retire on March 31, 2011. He will assist the company and his successor, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Executive Tim O'Toole, in the transition.

The company will not name a new North American CEO following Mike Murray’s recent departure. First Student President Linda Burtwistle and other business unit heads will report directly to Sir Moir Lockhead, CEO of FirstGroup plc.

IMMI wins engineering award for Premier seat

The award recognizes IMMI's work in increasing safety on motorcoaches and school buses with the development of the Premier seat, which incorporates SafeGuard SmartFrame technology to protect both belted and unbelted occupants.
