Bus purchases deferred for Massachusetts Head Start programs

The purchases will be put off this year due to anticipated budget cuts stemming from the federal sequester. Officials at two agencies that run Head Start programs in the state say that they don’t yet know the extent to which their budgets will be impacted. The Patriot Ledger reports that the sequester reduced the budget for Head Start by 5%.

Mom says pre-K daughter can’t ride school bus

A school bus passes Faith Bostic’s house, but only stops for Head Start students. Kanawha County Schools’ transportation director says the county can't afford to offer all of its pre-kindergarten students school bus transportation, but says that the girl can ride the bus as long as there's room and she catches it at an established Head Start stop.


Head Start final rule offers key exemptions

Head Start grantees have been given clearance to request waivers from two key Head Start transportation requirements — that each child be seated in a child restraint system while the vehicle is in motion and that each bus have at least one monitor on board at all times.
