Winners named in annual Photo Contest

The sixth edition of SCHOOL BUS FLEET’s Photo Contest, which was open to all types of school bus-related shots, drew more than 100 entries. The winning photos were submitted by transportation professionals in Arizona, Michigan and California.
Minnesota bus drivers honored for exemplary service

Six drivers receive the Minnesota School Bus Operators Association’s Transportation Specialist Award. Along with winning the award, a $1,000 check is given in each driver’s name to a scholarship fund for deserving youth in the school districts they serve.

The 130 Saf-T-Liner HDX buses will join Los Angeles Unified School District’s fleet of more than 300 alternative-fueled school buses. The district’s transportation department, which currently operates the largest CNG fleet in California, only accepts bids for buses that operate on alternative fuels.

Peter Lawrence, director of transportation for Fairport (N.Y.) Central School District, and his wife, Linda, have endowed one scholarship for a school bus driver trainer to attend the NYAPT/CYR Foundation Conference and three scholarships for driver trainers to attend the 2010 NAPT Summit.

The New Jersey legislation would mandate that school bus drivers for nonpublic schools undergo criminal history record checks. School bus drivers employed by agencies like the Department of Human Services would also fall under the requirement.

FMCSA charged bus operator Cayetano Martinez with 78 violations of 13 separate motor carrier safety regulations. The agency's claim identifies the four separate company names Martinez allegedly used to illegally operate and evade previous orders from FMCSA.

SBF wants your contributions for a forthcoming article on ways to enhance safety at school bus operations. We’ll cover a wide range of areas, including on the bus, during loading/unloading, in the bus lot and in the garage.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a letter to members of Congress that NHTSA will create educational materials “highlighting the benefits of school buses and promoting their use.”
