SBF wants your contributions for a forthcoming article on ways to enhance safety at school bus operations. We’ll cover a wide range of areas, including on the bus, during loading/unloading, in the bus lot and in the garage.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a letter to members of Congress that NHTSA will create educational materials “highlighting the benefits of school buses and promoting their use.”

For a person to be considered as a recipient, he or she must be a pupil transportation professional who performed a life-saving act, or the action must directly affect a pupil transportation program. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 1.

Transportation department develops safety programs

Bus drivers will be able to reward students for participating in the "Meet Me at the Bus Stop" and "My Brother's Keeper" programs, both of which are designed to improve school bus safety. The developments come after an accident in which a kindergartner was struck and killed by a passing motorist.
Illinois district to reconsider bus pass fees

A high volume of complaints from parents has led the school board to reconsider its policy, which would have saved $85,000.
Perley Thomas opened Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1916. The company manufactured streetcars until 1936, when it began producing school buses. Perley served as a design consultant for the company, now known as Thomas Built Buses, until his death in 1958.

On Friday, Perley A. Thomas will be inducted into the North America Railway Hall of Fame. Thomas opened a streetcar manufacturing company, Perley A. Thomas Car Works, in 1916, which began manufacturing school buses 20 years later.
First Student wins Ohio, Michigan contracts

Under a three-year agreement, the contractor will serve Columbus City Schools beginning July 1, operating more than 270 of the district’s routes. The company’s three-year contract with Oak Park Schools will begin with the 2010-11 school year. It will provide regular and special-education busing for students.

After 7-year-old Kyron Horman didn’t return home on his school bus as scheduled on June 4, his family called the school, which then called police. Although the boy was at the school that morning for a science fair, staff reported that he wasn’t in his classroom afterward.
Michigan bill would increase illegal passing penalties

Introduced in the House this month, the bill would double fines for motorists who pass a stopped school bus. Drivers who cause an injury or death in a school bus zone would receive prison terms.
Zonar donates scholarships to attend NAPT Summit

Apollo Video to outfit nearly 700 buses with surveillance system

The RoadRunner video surveillance system will be installed on the school buses, operated by First Student for Buffalo (N.Y.) Public Schools. The system integrates GPS capabilities, allowing for synchronization with the video. Each bus will also be equipped with cameras and audio recording abilities.

Gilbert Perea, the state pupil transportation director for New Mexico, will retire later this month with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. It began when he was a basketball coach, which required him to be licensed as a school bus activity driver.

NAPT recommends Peaceful School Bus Program

The program, created at an elementary school in New York, is designed to change the social dynamics on the school bus to reduce bullying incidents. It is available to NAPT members at a 20-percent discount.
If regular-ed transportation is not provided during the next school year, about 10 percent of Poway (Calif.) Unified School District's student population of 33,000 will have to find another way to school.

The Connecticut legislation imposes a $2,500 penalty on anyone who falsifies a report on the maintenance of a school bus or removes an out-of-service sticker on a bus and uses it to transport students.
