SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An 11-year-old student here was killed and two of his siblings were injured after being struck by a vehicle while waiting for their school bus on Monday morning, police said.

The crash was reported at around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Geibel Road and Pine Drive, WTAEreports. Trooper Dan Kesten of Pennsylvania State Police told WTAE that they believe the car had approached the intersection, stopped at the stop sign, and then made a right turn at that intersection. However, Kesten added that given the time of day it was — with the strong glare from the sun — the driver proceeded to make the right turn, did not see the three children standing or sitting along the roadway, and struck them. There is no indication yet as to whether any charges will be filed.

Eleven-year-old Mark Fike was pronounced dead at Butler Memorial Hospital, while 9-year-old Lyssa Fike was treated for an ankle injury, and 6-year-old Ryan Fike was transported to another hospital for undisclosed injuries, KDKA reports.

Brian J. White, Jr., the superintendent for Butler Area School District, said in a statement posted on the district’s website that he is "at a loss for words" in regards to the tragedy, and that "anytime a student passes it is devastating." White added that the district is grateful for all of the support it has received, and will be providing extra counseling services for students and staff members during this difficult time.
