Illinois District Approves School Bus Stop-Arm Cameras

Posted on November 29, 2018

YORKVILLE, Ill. — A school district here recently approved the placement of stop-arm cameras on a number of the district’s school buses.

The Yorkville Community Unit School District 115 said in a Facebook post that the board of education approved the purchase and installation of 10 school bus stop-arm cameras at its meeting on Nov. 26.

The district also said in the post that the cameras would be implemented in high-risk areas to capture video footage of motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses.

Dr. Tim Shimp, the district’s superintendent, told Kendall County Now that the district will pay the $324.90 cost of each camera, while Septran Transportation, the district’s busing contractor, will pay for the installation. Shimp added that the board plans to discuss the implementation of the stop-arm cameras on a monthly basis, tracking the violations, and whether local authorities would be able to keep up with the number of violations.
