LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A school bus mechanic here was killed after the bus he had been driving rolled down a hill and hit him, authorities said.

Pulaski County Special School District told KATV that on Oct. 29 Jason Johnson, 40, stopped the bus on Towne Oaks Dr. and got off to check it because he noticed that the door to the lift gate had opened. As Johnson closed the door to the lift gate, the air brake released, causing the bus to start rolling.

The district told KATV that Johnson ran alongside the bus and attempted to get back inside to stop the bus, but as Johnson tried to get back on board, he was killed. No students or other vehicles were present during the incident.

The district said in a Facebook post that they are mourning the loss of Johnson, who served the district for nearly a decade, and that they are offering their condolences to his family during this time.
