NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A 6-year-old boy with autism was left on a school bus after falling asleep on board Monday morning, CBS New York reports.

Roxanne Mendoza, the mother of Armani Johnson, told the news source that she did not find out about the incident until eight hours later, when an official from Meadow Hill School called and told her that someone spotted her son on a security camera.

School officials told CBS New York that Johnson was never alone on the bus, and that after all of the children were dropped off at school that morning, his bus went back out to pick up preschool students who have a later start time. However, Johnson was found by school staff on the bus an hour after the preschool students had already been dropped off, the news source reports.

The school told CBS New York that school bus aides are supposed to check for students sleeping on the bus at the end of each route. As a result, the transportation company that the school contracts their buses with told the news source that the aide on Johnson's bus has been terminated.
