Student Dies of Injuries From School Bus Crash

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — A 6-year-old girl died on Tuesday from injuries she received after her school bus overturned on Monday afternoon, The Telegraph reports.

Arlana Hays was pronounced dead at a hospital at 1:09 a.m., Houston County Coroner Danny Galpin told the news source.

Four students and the driver were treated for minor injuries, according to The Telegraph. A monitor was also aboard the bus.

John Wagner, the assistant police chief for Warner Robins Police Department, said that the Houston County Schools bus, which was transporting more than 35 students, crashed while traveling downhill and attempting to make a 90-degree left turn, according to The Telegraph. Wagner added that the driver couldn’t negotiate the turn, and the bus turned on its side and slid in the grass for about 15 to 20 feet. Wagner commended the students on the bus, who ranged in age from 6 years old to 11 years old, for being calm.

Another recent school bus crash in Georgia involved a fatality: As previously reported, a 5-year-old girl in Liberty County was killed in December when the driver lost control of the bus. It ran off the road and into a ditch, and hit a tree. The roof of the bus caved in on the passengers. The girl was sitting in the front right area of the bus, which sustained the strongest impact in the crash.

I am thinking that places which have intersections at the bottom of hills should have guard rails. In snowy or rain or dry ice it's just a matter of time before someone slides into that turn and leaves the road ! Perhaps drivers should audit their routes for the various hazards that can arise in various weather conditions, particularly in rural areas ? Then the county should take action to reduce those risks.
