NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — A former school bus driver here has been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty on Friday in the death of a student who was dragged by and then run over by his bus, the Associated Press reports.

As previously reported, in October 2016, Summer Steele, 9, was dropped off at her stop at approximately 4 p.m. She was not fully clear from the bus when the door closed, and became caught in the door as the operator began to drive away. Steele was dragged for a short distance and then was struck by the bus. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors said that the driver, Tendzin Parsons, was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading guilty to negligent motor vehicle homicide, according to the Associated Press. Parson had told police, according to the news source, that he thought that all the students were clear from the bus and was focused on his next stop.
