LANCASTER, Pa. — More than a dozen students and their bus driver were injured on Wednesday morning after their school bus overturned in a collision allegedly caused by a hit-and-run driver trying to pass other vehicles, WHTM reports.

East Lampeter Township police told the news source that just before 8 a.m., the bus was taking students to school when the crash occurred. One student was ejected from the bus and was reportedly pinned underneath it, and was flown to the hospital. Lancaster Mennonite School Superintendent Pam Tieszen told WHTM that the student is in critical condition.

A spokesman for Lancaster General Health told the news source that the hospital received a total 16 people who were injured in the crash: 14 students, the bus driver, and the driver of one of the other vehicles involved in the crash. The spokesman also said that three of the students suffered from traumatic injuries. Twelve of the students and both drivers were treated for their injuries and were released from the hospital.

Police told WHTM that they are looking for the driver who allegedly caused the crash by trying to pass two tractor-trailers and their escort vehicles while heading east on the highway. When the driver of the car tried to return to the east lane to make way for the approaching bus, heading west, it hit an escort vehicle, and that vehicle sideswiped the bus, causing it to hit a pre-manufactured home on the tractor-trailer and tip onto its side, WHTM reports.
