MONROE, La. — A school bus driver and aide here have been arrested after a student with special needs was left on a bus, KTVE reports.

The arrest report states that on April 4 at about 11:32 a.m., police were called to the school bus yard of Monroe City Schools, according to the news source. Michael Felton, the manager of the transportation department, told police officers that a 10-year-old child with special needs who is epileptic was discovered in the parking lot of the bus yard, and that he had fallen asleep. Felton added that the bus the boy was riding was driven by Christopher Yates and that the bus aide was Vicky Hampton.

Hampton told officers that she knew the boy was on the bus when they arrived at the school, but that she was distracted while talking with a teacher and assumed that the child had exited the bus, according to KTVE. Yates told officers that he saw Hampton walk to the back of the bus while checking the seats. He added that he did not see any students on the bus, but that he did not check every seat or check under the seats, the news source reports. Yates also said that the boy had crawled under a seat in the past.
