GREENVILLE, S.C. — A school bus driver here was credited with keeping students out of the path of a car that passed the bus on the right side on Wednesday morning.
The incident was captured on the video surveillance cameras on the Greenville County Schools bus. The district shared the footage on Facebook.
The school bus driver had stopped on a highway to pick up students who were on the left side of the road. In the video, the driver can be seen holding up her hand to keep the students from crossing. Suddenly, a car speeds along the shoulder on the right side of the bus, its tires squealing as it veers back onto the road and drives off.
The driver can be heard saying to the students, “See what I mean?” She keeps them waiting for another moment as she continues to look around, then she directs them across the road.
“We are thankful for the watchful eye of our bus driver who held her hand up and kept children from crossing the road,” Greenville County Schools said in the Facebook post. “She is a hero.”
The district also took the opportunity to remind motorists of the need to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students.
“Stop. Be aware. Protect our students,” the district wrote. “Never pass a bus with an extended stop sign.”

WSPA reported that district officials could not make out the license plate number of the car that passed the school bus, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
