Virginia School Bus Overturns

Posted on November 15, 2016

NORFOLK, Va. — A school bus here overturned as the driver was transporting about 24 students to school on Tuesday morning, police told WVEC.

The bus hit a wall separating lanes of traffic as it was accessing the on-ramp to Interstate 64, according to the news source. The bus driver and about nine of the students aboard were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, and the other students aboard the bus were unharmed.

Two students told a 13News Now reporter that they helped other students get off the bus after it overturned, and that it seemed like the bus had been going too fast as it drove onto the on-ramp. Investigators told WVEC that the bus was the only vehicle involved in the accident, and that the bus driver told them she had been blinded by the sunlight. They would not confirm whether speed was a factor, according to the news source.

Some parents raised concerns with 13News Now about the school bus not being equipped with seat belts. The news source responded by publishing information about school bus safety and seat belts from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
