Transportation Manager Uses CPR Training to Save School Bus Driver’s Life

HOUSTON — A school transportation manager here sprung into action recently to help a school bus driver who fell ill, using her CPR training.

Houston Independent School District (HISD) bus driver Liliam Lemus got sick soon after returning from her route early last week, according to a school district blog post. Northwest Motor Pool Area Manager Terriel Price was able to use her CPR, first aid, and cardiopulmonary training, provided by the district’s transportation department, after Lemus stopped breathing. Price said that she performed CPR while she had 911 on the phone.

The district’s transportation services department offers to bus drivers and attendants safety and prevention strategy training, including certified American Red Cross first aid and CPR training courses, each year, according to the blog post.

HISD Transportation General Manager Nathan Graf said that Price was able to save a life because she had access to the training. He added that Price “could have waited until help arrived, but she didn’t. … I’m really proud.”
