‘Bus Buddies’ program helps young riders find stops

Posted on July 8, 2013

HOUSTON — Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District is seeking volunteers for its Bus Buddies program, which is designed to help young bus riders find their stops during the first week of school, Community Impact reports.

The program was developed in 2005 by the district’s Partners in Education director, Pam Scott. Volunteers from throughout the school district are asked to assist during the afternoon bus rides. Each volunteer ensures that elementary school students safely disembark the bus at the correct stop during the first three days of the school year.

Karen Mann, Scott’s secretary, told the publication that the Bus Buddies program has helped to reduce students’ stress, and it also provides relief to parents.

This sounds like an excellent idea. The older students who have probably ridden on the bus route for many years, assist the younger ones. Bus drivers have many things to observe during the early school days. Where I drive, in a big yellow bus near Toronto, we appreciate the "bus buddy" system. They also help mentor these new riders into proper bus behaviour. Most of the buddies will help out until the younger ones get confident with bus routines.
